Publication: “Social work around the world”

Winner of the literary prize of the book fair “Plumes et Ancres Sociales” in June 2018, this book questions the identity of the profession of social worker and aims to highlight educational practices and social actions used on the five continents.

Each social worker develop a toolbox, which is essential in daily work. A mixture of knowledge, know-how and skills that develop over time according to learning and experiences. An open box built around the values of humility, respect and commitment. Open to face the constant evolutions of a profession where each one tries to accept its limits and its impotence. Created in September 2011 after two years of necessary reflection, the association Éduc autour du monde aims to complete this toolbox. Not to fill it but to enrich it with the practicies of our neighbors of the world.

The chapter 8 is entirely dedicated to the specifics of street social work – a profession with multiple names, as the authors point out – in light of the issue of children in street situations in Senegal:

  • Senegal, meeting street children
  • The street as the only escape
  • Street children, in the street, on the street or in a street situation
  • Life on the street
  • Paradoxical over-adaptation
  • Samu social Senegal, a specific method
  • Psychological support in addition to social work
  • Networking
  • Perspectives in the care of children in street situations

From indigenous people in Alaska to juveniles at risk in Quebec, child labor in Peru to the situation of young people living with HIV in Cambodia, street children from Kathmandu to Dakar, this book is also an invitation to take a trip as close as possible to the grassroots realities of social work professionals. Experience punctuated by the encounters with social workers, trainers, university teachers , directors of structures or representatives of international federations… More than fifty professionals from all over the world have agreed to share their practice and their vision of social work.

Based on a field analysis of the social sector, its professions and training, this book highlight similarities and confronts differences. Throughout the pages is emphasized the common values of committed professionals who intervene in a society torn apart and whose intact determination offers the right to hope.
