DRC: New partnership with the Air France Foundation for children in street situations in Kinshasa

The Air France Foundation renewed for 2018-2019 its support to Dynamo International ASBL and the Congolese member of Dynamo International – Street Workers Network. The sum of 30,000 euros donated by the Foundation will help improve childcare conditions in the new emergency shelter for street-connected children in Kinshasa.

Built in Kinshasa in 2017 thanks to the contributions of various partners, including the Air France Foundation, LIKEMO is the first emergency shelter for children in street situations in Kinshasa. With a maximum capacity of 25 children during the night and 50 during the day, the center aims to be a safe haven for children and a point of convergence for the team of the CATSR-Committee of Support to Social Street Work, which is responsible for its operational management. CATSR’s staff includes about thirty people, including a nurse, a cook and about ten street educators, who play a key role in liaising between the street, the center and the biological or host family.

Accommodation in the shelter is not meant to be long-term. A rapid reorientation to more suitable institutions is granted according to the state and situation of each child. Rejected by their families or the community, most children who pass through the center are between 6 and 15 years old. They live in precariousness and survive from begging.

Since its inauguration in November 2017, this new center faces multiple challenges related to its management and the care of the growing number of children in street situations. The most basic basic needs are of materials. The contribution of the Air France Foundation primarily aims to meet the needs for food, clothes, mattresses, linens, hygiene products (soap, towels, …), medical supplies, etc.
